Time to turn over some old memories.
Remember back in the day when I used to put out rants on this every few days? ...Remember back in the day when I actually used this? Heh heh heh...
As for the rant, they say time heals all wounds. But what about the wounds that time creates? I'd go so far as to say that time CAN'T heal all wounds, because there are plenty of wounds caused by Time itself. Take the best of friends. Now separate them for 1 year. Time, in this case, works as a bit of an acid, dissolving what they once had. Now that the two friends went on and changed, their friendship is likely not going to be the same.
But here I am, wondering how much acid it would take to dissolve longing, and will to be together.
So many times, if two people are apart, they grow apathetic about the other. At what point, exactly, does a person neglect to communicate with someone that they lose interest in the person themselves? And further more, what causes it? Is it something we've watched that person do? Is it something we've heard about them? Either way, in the time that these two people would be separated, anything could happen. Thus, character can change, too.
What causes a character change? What makes a person stop being who that person is? Or rather, what is the thing that makes a person redefine themselves? I know that for me, it when I mentally broke down from the stress of my teenage years. Yes, I'll say it, I broke down. And when I broke down, I had to piece myself back together again, but this time, I made things how I wanted them to be, not what everyone else saw me as being. Or was it the other way around? I can't remember now. But something changed about me that year. This entire change of character happened in the course of a single year. Maybe 6 months, even. That's how fast a character can change. And if two people are apart for over a year, even if they were best friends, could come together again and realize that they're nothing how they were, and had nothing in common anymore.
So as you can see, Time can create wounds for all of us. Turn your back on someone for too long, and you'll be looking at someone else when you turn back around.
